In May 1945, an advance unit of General Patton’s Third Army crossed into Czechoslovakia to liberate it from Nazi rule.

By chance, they entered the ancestral village of their commander, Colonel Matt Konop. Raised in a Czech-speaking enclave in Wisconsin, Konop was fluent in the language. After surviving Omaha Beach and the long campaign across Europe, he came face-to-face with his roots.
